  1. Use the acronym Mrs Dr Vandertrampp Those are the etre verbs if it's not one of these it's going to be an avoir verb except if it's reflexive it's always etre.

    Monter,

    Retourner,

    Sortir,

    Descendre,

    Rester,

    Venir,

    Arriver,

    Naitre,

    Devenir,

    Entrer,

    Rentrer,

    Tomber,

    Revenir,

    Aller,

    Mourir,

    Partir,

    Passer

  2. zhp mis where have you been all my french learning life? (now, if only I can remember Mrs. Dr. vonRibbontropff lol)

  3. Note that all the verbs conjugated with auxiliary "être" express a change of state, a change of condition of the grammatical subject. Careful, some verbs can be conjugated either with "être" or "avoir":

    MONTER:

    - Elle est montée (she has gone upstairs)

    - Elle a monté les valises (she has brought up the suitcases: here, it is not the grammatical subject "elle" that undergoes a change but the object "les valises", therefore auxiliary "être" is not used)

    PASSER:

    - Il est passé devant la mairie (he walked past the town hall)

    - il a passé un examen (he took an exam)

In those two examples, in the first sentence the subject undergoes a change (therefore "être" is used) whereas in the second sentence, there is a grammatical object (les valises, un examen) which undergoes the action performed by the grammatical subject.

I don't know how familiar you are with grammatical terminology but to make it simple French children learn that verbs of state are conjugated with "être" and verbs of action are conjugated with "avoir". But foreign students may prefer to memorize the lists given above. However, to avoid making mistakes it's best to understand the rule too and not just memorize.

  4. You use avoir for almost every verb except-

    devenir- to become- devenu

    revenir- to come back- revenu

    monter- to climb- monté

    rester- to rest- resté

    sortir- to exit- sorti

passer- to pass by (this case only)- passé

    venir- to come- venu

    aller- to go- allé

    naître- to be born- né

    descendre- to descend- descendu

    entrer- to enter- entré

    retourner- to return- retourné

    tomber- to fall- tombé

    rentrer- to re-enter- rentré

    arriver- to arrive- arrivé

    mourir- to die- mort

    partir- to leave- parti

These use etre. You just have to memorise them. They often have to do with motion/movement. Remember DR & MRS VANDERTRAMPP.

    Also, reflexive verbs use etre.
