  1. No.  Both Amtrak (USA) and VIA (Canada) run primarily east-west, because that's the way most rail routes were built.

You could get from Denver to Canada by traveling west on Amtrak's California Zephyr to Emeryville, CA, then North on Amtrak's Coast Starlight to Seattle, then a Cascade train to Vancouver, BC.  From there you would travel east on VIA.  Not sure about the final leg to get you into Calgary.  But what I describe above is a "long scenic route" that would take a few days.

  2. yes other poster is partly right but you dont have go all the emeryvill to catch the starlight -you can change in Sacramento

instead for the starlight to Seattle then  either a bus or the casades to Vancover then VIA rail to calgray

  3. There is no VIA Rail service to Calgary.  The only passenger rail service to Calgary is the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver.  They seem to do only package holidays.

EDIT:  Check the second link for a list of VIA Rail stations - you will see Calgary is not listed.  There is no VIA Rail service to Calgary.

EDIT:  You can purchase the 2-day, 1-night package on the Rocky Mountaineer to get you from Vancouver to Calgary from  April to October.
