Question:

Passenger on a street bike?

My boyfriend just got a brand new 2008 Yamaha FZ6 bike and he took me out for a ride for the first time yesterday. It was great fun and I enjoyed myself a lot except we had two problems. First of all, our helmets kept hitting each other at the slightest jolts which was kind of annoying. If I sat any farther back I would just slide forward as soon as he slowed down at all, and also, I didn't feel as secure when I wasn't sitting close to him. The second problem was, his neck got sore because he had his head forward because my helmet was in the way if he tried to put it back. If I leaned any farther to one side or the other than I already was, then I would throw us off balance especially on the turns. I hope this makes sense, its kind of hard to explain. Any help you could give me would be appreciated! Thanks!

  1. I agree with terry hot, just cause it has the peg's & a seat it is not really made for passenger's. That being said, if he can learn to clutch & brake a little smoother & you learn how to antisipate what he & the bike are going to do it should get a little better. ride safe

  2. Sounds like both he AND you need to learn to ride.  My wife kept bonking me until I learned to be smoother and she learned to anticipate what I was doing.  We came up with a code to communicate important things, like Hang On, Lean With Me, Back Up, Loosen Up and I Love You (OK, I'm a little sappy about my wife).

I pat her hands to hang on, wiggle them to loosen up, nudge her with my butt so my nads aren't getting crushed, put my hand up and tip it over to tell her to lean more, and shake her leg a bit to get her to loosen up.

At the same time, she'll pat my leg to tell me to slow down, reach around with her hand and make a fist/pulling motion to stop (usually for a cramp), and I try to ride in such a way that she can trust me and be smoother.

It has made me a better rider, and I can do blip downshifts and emergency stops with her on the back without bonking or unsettling the bike at all now.  Just remember that as a passenger, you have a HUGE impact on how it handles.

  3. That bike or any cyn racer really is not designed for another person. Just because it has two sets of pegs does not make it safe. Sounds like he bought the wrong bike for two up .!!!! you will not be safe riding that type of bike two up no matter  what any one says !!!!!!!!!!

  4. you may want to consider getting a different seat.  my gf and me had problems with my zx11. got a seat with a backrest and she was happy.  she got to lean back and use the grab handles.  she felt a lot safer.  its very comfortable and its from the biggest name in MC seats

heres a link to the bike on corbins site.  the backrest is sold separately.  it looks good on that bike.  enjoy
