I live in NZ and I have recently bough myself a 50CC Scooter.

When there is traffic to a standstill all the other Motorbikes pass the cars on the right and push in front of all of them.Is this Legal aas all the Motorbikes do it here and it seems dangerous but I feel sily riding behind all of the cars wen other people on bikes push in front of them?????

  1. Well, in the UK the same thing happens. Technically I think you can be done for dangerous driving, but in reality, so long as you're not really leary about it then it's pretty much accepted by both public and police.

  2. Where I live you will be ticketed for improper lane usage and reckless driving. Passing on the right is illegal and is VERY dangerous!

  3. You need to contact the NZ roads authority to find out for sure. In Australia, it is an illegal practise (referred to as lane-splitting if passing up the middle of two lanes heading in the same direction) because only one vehicle is permitted in a single lane at a time. If you cross an unbroken line while passing, that is a different traffic violation. If you are caught lane-splitting while on the right hand side of the lane markings (we drive on the left hand side of the road in Aus and NZ), you can also be pinged for passing another vehicle on its left hand side.
