  1. "People who talk too much are hated by her.", if I'm not mistaken.

Active voice means that the subject is the person who does the action.

So, "SHE hates people who talk too much."

Passive voice is when the object of the sentence, the thing that receives the action, becomes the subject.

So, "PEOPLE WHO TALK TOO MUCH are hated by her."

Almost all passive voiced sentences use the word "by".

  2. People who talk too much are hated by her

  3. People who talk to much are hated by her.

The passive voice is formed by changing the subject in the active voice (she in this instance) into the agent (the one performing the action). You also need to switch the direct object (people who talk too much or "them") into the subject of your sentence.

Then you use the form of "to be" to match the new subject of your sentence- in this instance "are", followed by the past participle, in this case "hated".

Then you use "by" to indicate the agent, then you use the original subject in the active sentence, in this case "she", but it needs to be changed into an object pronoun "her" in this instance.

Should you wish to change this into past tense: i.e. the original being "She hated people who talk too much", you would simply change the form of "to be", leaving the rest untouched. This becomes "People who talk too much were hated by her".

Other examples of active vs. passive construction:

Mark put the books on the self.

The books were placed on the shelf by Mark.

    James closed the window.

The window was closed by James.

    Everyone loves ice cream.

Ice cream is loved by all (you could use everyone, but it sounds better to use all in this instance)

    Harold sent me the packages.

The packages were sent to me by Harold.

You can even use a combination of direct/indirect object pronouns:

    Mary gave them to us.

They were given to us by Mary.

    He delivers it to us..

They are delivered to us by him.

Be careful not to overuse the passive voice- most English teachers prefer to see the active voice used- though it is important to know how to recognize and construct the passive voice as well.
