i just did an experiment with an egg and vinegar where the shell became soft and changed in size. one question my lab is asking "Evaluate the lab and data collected. Would you conclude that the lab represented active transport or passive transport? Explain your answer."

i just want to know how will i know if its passive transport or active transport i read the definition and examples, but i still dont understand how will i choose which one is which for this lab.

i really do wanna understand i'm not just here for the answer. honestly.

  1. It would be passive transport.

The concentration of water outside the egg, would be lower than inside, therefor the water in the egg will move with the diffusion gradient, removing water from the egg, and creating a ballance, called osmosis

Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration through a semi permiable memberane.

The high concentration would be inside the ess, the low concentration would be the vinigar solution, and the membrane would be the egg shell.

Active transport is against the gradient, ie from high conc to low conc, and this requires energy.

  2. i believe it would be passive because you didnt use any force to make the vinegar go into the egg. I also do not believe that there were any pumps in the cell membrane to make it active transport. It diffused across the egg shell, making it passive transport
