  1. Canadian citizens flying between a Canadian and American airport require a valid passport.  This rule is new as of January 2007, under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.

    Canadian citizens driving or sailing between Canada and the U.S. are not yet affected by the new rule.  When crossing the border by land or sea, they are expected to provide either:

        * A valid passport, or

        * Government issued photo ID (e.g. a driver's license) and proof of citizenship (typically a Canadian birth certificate or citizenship card).

    Eventually, a passport may be required for Canadians and Americans 16 and older to cross the border by land and sea.  However, this rule will not take effect before the summer of 2008, and under proposed legislation may take effect as late as June 2009.

  2. You may or may not need a passport depending on how you enter the US.You are required to hold a valid passport if you travel by AIR. You don't need a passport when traveling by "LAND or SEA" (TILL JUNE 2009) You need a government issued photo ID such as a driver's license and birth certificate.

  3. You can travel by LAND from Canada to the U.S. with a photo I.D. and birth certificate.  See site below.  Paasports will not be needed for LAND travel until June 2009.  You can travel within the U.S. freely with your photo I.D.  If you would like, you can call your airline to verify this.  If you are travelling without your parents, you should have a letter of permission signed and notarized...giving you permission to travel alone.  See 2nd site.

  4. for any govt of Canada info go to www.gc.ca then search for passport info.   However, you should get a passport because of the new rules about access to US--they are getting very tough about this and, even though they have modified the rules they keep changing what/when they will demand a passport from Canadians.   As for once you are in the US, you don't need a passport to go from state to state---but it does serve as proof of id if you are ever asked.   You would have to show your passport to get into the US and might have to use it as proof of id when flying from Buffalo to Florida but not as a document to allow you into the US as you are already there.
