Question:

Passport / Canada question?

I'm planning a trip to Toronto, ON, Canada from the US, Ohio to be exact, and I know I need ID to get into Canada, but coming back to the US from Canada, do I absolutely need a Passport? Or would I be able to use just my Birth certificate and Drivers License?

The trip will be made by car, and is planned for may of this year.

  1. You don't need a passport when traveling by "LAND or SEA" (TILL JUNE 2009) You need a government issued photo ID such as a driver's license and birth certificate. You won't need a passport when you're going back to the US.You are required to hold a valid passport if you travel by AIR.

  2. Better check the State Department website for the latest information, rather than relying on info from this board.  The laws about passports have been changing and there has recently been a change in the laws in re Canada crossings.  There has been some talk of using some type of identity card rather than passports for travel to/from Canada, but I don't think that has gone into effect yet.

If you do need a passport, it's too late to get one for May, anyway.

  3. In May, you'll still be able to get away with picture ID and birth certificate............Apply for Passport though, things are changing fast..........Double check before you go
