Passport for Mexico?

As of right now, are Passports needed to go to Mexico by Land? (Not Air)

If not, what should be brought to the border?

(ex. Birth Cerificate,...)

  2. passport wont be required until 2009.  All you need is a valid id and a birth certificate.  i was just there last weekend and had no problems getting back.

  3. Let's clarify:  Mexico does not require a US Citizen to have a Passport if they cross by Land.

    US will start requiring a Passport to its Citizens starting July 2009 when returning to US by land.

    In the link given in the above answer  you will find the latest recommendations for proofs of identity and citizenship needed.

    That said....

    I strongly recommend you get a Passport. Specially if you simply don't look "American". It will make your Life 100 times easier for you and the border patrol officer when crossing the border in your way back.
