Passport from Canada?

My friends and I are going on a daytrip to Victoria Canada tomorrow, and on the website it says nothing about needing a passport to get through to Canada, but I talked to another friend that said in order to get back to the US from Canada you need a passport. I was wondering if that is true, because two of us going don't have passports and don't want to get stranded in Canada!

If you are driving across the canadian boarder - US citizens are not required to have a passport to do so until June of 2009

You will need ID and proof of citizenship ( birth certificate and drivers license )

If you are flying - you are required to have a passport
