whats the difference between a passport book and a passport card and do i need both?

The passport card only works for travel between the US and:  Canada, Mexico, Caribbean.  It also only works if you are travelling via car or boat.  It's mainly intended for people who live near a border and cross it frequently.

The passport book works for going to any country, and works for airplanes as well as cars and boats.

You *can* have both, but you don't *have to* have both.

The card is relatively new. Its more for people who live near the border and cross over frequently for shopping, work or entertainment. Its only good for Canada, Mexico and I believe the Caribbean. The passport book will take you anywhere in the world. Just get the book. You do not need both.
