My roomate and i are going to cancun oct6th, she got her passport in 6 days, mine is still pending, according to the Consult to Mexico website(i found on the state dept page) you don't need a passport to travel into mexico just a birth certificate, but according to the state dept site, if i print a copy of my application i will be ok. But that is only good till sept 30th and we are traveling on the 6th of october, so what should i do, cancel the trip now, or pray.

  1. I don't know if it applies to everyone or only to people who are

flying in from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean, but I saw on TV that at least some people can get by if they show a page they have downloaded from the passport site proving that the passport office has received their request & is processing their passport. The website is at

    www.travel.state.gov

but I don't know what you have

to do after that to get the verification that your passport is being processed.

  2. I just wen thru the same thing.  If you don't have your passport within 14 days of travel, call the number on the passport website and they'll put a rush on it.  I received mine 6 days before I left by priority mail.

  3. You will not be able to use the copy of the application, it is indeed only an option until September 30th.

You do need a passport to travel to Mexico after September 30th, if you are arriving by air or by boat.  Since very few people from the US travel to Cancun by car, I will assume you are not doing so.

However, the good news is that it is far too early to give up on your trip, almost certainly you will be just fine.

First question is when did you apply for your passport, and did you pay for expedited service?  When you applied did you enter the date you were leaving on the passport application?

If you paid for expidited service, and you haven't gotten it yet, then I would not worry if it's been less than a month or so.  Your roomate may have just gotten lucky.

If that is not true, and it has been at least 10 days since you sent in your application then you can track your application online on the state department web site.  Do it.  If there is a problem finding it then you will be able to contact them to find out what is going on and to hurry it up.

Routine service is supposed to take 10-12 weeks, and expedited service is supposed to take 3 weeks. Don't even begin getting worried till those time periods have passed.

At this point you still have a month before you can do much more about it.  When you hit 14 days before your trip (SEPTEMBER 22) you should call the passport office at the SECOND number below.   Call them early and often, and put up with long waits.

Ultimately the passport office should get your passport to you in time - but you might have to jump through the hoops.

  4. Sneak in like the mexicans sneak in here!!!

You will be considered an illegal alien!

  5. no you definitely need a passport to travel back into to the United States not to travel to mexico though

will it be coming soon though? call and check the status of it maybe you can go to cancun and the passpot will arrive by the time it is time for you to come back

  6. You better pray you get it, or they extend that Sept 30 date.  Here is your problem they are only extending that date for people that applied and their check has cleared.

They had to make all these arrangements with Mexico, Canada ect.  As far as I can tell from their website, they are not extending this.  Their announcement said that it was early enough that you could change plans when they made the announcement back in June 8th.  And to make sure your travel plans have you back before Sept 30th.  I dont think they will extend.  I think you should consider making your trip early or plan on cancelling.

    Good Luck.

  7. You can get by by showing your passport application that you have applied for passport. This was set up for cases like yours.

  8. If the print-out is only valid for a certain period of time, wait to print it out until later so that it won't expire before you leave.

  9. call the sentters office.

  10. Pray

  11. I traveled into Mexico about 8 months ago with only a drivers LIC If that has changed its new to me. Of course I drove in and out I don't know if that makes a difference.
