  1. The number is unique to that one passport, and the passport records will show to whom it was issued.  As others already said, since that one passport is known to have been issued to that one person, that person's travel can be tracked if necessary.

    A passport number is not like a SSN, however, since every passport has its own number that is never duplicated.  When the passport expires, or is lost or stolen, the traveler will get a new one with a different number.

  2. the passport number tells you who the owner of the passport is even if you lost the passport. your SS number tells you who you are, where you came from and important info about you.

  3. It allows the US goverment to know the exact time, day, and place of departure and entrance into the united States.

  4. it does not serve the same purpose as the social security,

    passport numbers changes as you renew your passport, you never have the same,it only applies to you and your travels,and for the validity of the passport;

    if you were to loose you social security card? you would continue to have the same number, it is for life,

    passport number has many signification in it,

    you can be tracked trough that number,and keep trail of your travels ,

    and with the new ones ? it is even tighter, and more secure, for whom? not sure it is for you? for the country of which you are a citizen of.

  5. It is your own personal ID number, each passport number is unique only to you and it allows the relevant government agencies to be able to check when and where you entered and left a country.

    This is why the new machine-readable passports are being issued and have been for many, many years now.
