Without the new Real ID people will have hard time boarding a plane or entering a Federal building. Can we use passports, birth certificates and naturalization certificates to board planes and enter federal buildings in case we have no such Real ID?

  1. Yes

  2. a passport used to be considered a travel document before, but it is now considered as an ID,

to board a plane, one must have a passport, no, birth certificates and naturalization certificates are not considered as proper ID,

and certainly not to board planes.

  3. Gorman is mostly right;  A birth certificate or natz document is not considered ID:  it is only proof of citizenship.  And remember, that Real ID has not yet been enacted, so it does not yet apply to any travel.  For people without passports or drivers licenses, state-issued identification (usually issued also at DMV or the equivalent) works fine in the meantime.

I am a US citizen but I use my passport to board all internal as well as international flights.

  4. Yes, you can use a passport.  You cannot use birth certificates and naturalization certificates.  In fact, if you are living in a state that isn't participating in REAL ID, you will be forced to get a passport for this purpose.
