If I have an American passport, do I need a visa to travel to Switzerland? And if so, can I stay within the EU indefinitely?

  1. As far as I know, Switzerland is not part of the EU. But most likely you do not need a visa, a valid passport should be sufficient. With visas, they are usually valid for a specific amount of time. I just came back from Turkey where I needed a visa which was valid for three months. But, to the best of my knowledge you can stay in the EU as long as you would like.

  2. what are you talking about VISAS? Yes you need a passport to travel out of the country even in the opposite country, need to make sure Switzies aren't going to arrest you just because you have a passport from your country. Need one from theres as well... is that what you meant my visa?

  3. Great question!! I lived in France an London as a U.S. citizen, and in France, I was able to stay for three months without a visa, and in England was able to stay for 6. Each country is different. I would reccomend getting a visa just in case, but if not, go to another country for a day and your 3 or 4 or 5 months will start again!

  4. No, you don't need a visa to travel to Switzerland.

The maximum length of stay in Europe for non European Union passport holders is determined by the Schengen accord and is currently limited to 90 days within any 180 day period.

Switzerland, which belongs neither to the EU nor to the European Economic Area, has the same visiting limits as Schengen.

  5. How can ignorant American assume that they still can to things in Europe which European citizen can not do in the United States after 9/11.

Sorry, but that pisses me off.
