  1. Right click on the file

    Properties

    Security

    Change everything in there.

  2. You can zip the file and then add a password using winzap.

  3. Buy another computer......even an old computer would do, use this for mere storage purposes.  So you have one computer that works on-line, and another computer that never goes on-line and serves as a mere storage for sensitive documents.

  4. Open word, when you created your document go into TOOLS then OPTIONS  a box appears select SECURITY you can then set a password to protect that document next time you try to open the document a box will appear asking for your password.

  5. If you use Word: Tools/Protect Document - create a password.

    There are many free ware programs that will password or even hide your files. Among them are:AxCrypt, see link;

  6. Yes. Go "File" menu, "Save as" "Options", Security

    , then add a password.

  7. you can try this freeware works fine on folders and files

  8. Update: Just found this nifty software, I haven't personally used it, but it may be what you are looking for.

    If you just have a text file (not a word document) then you can use LockNote.  You could put the file/files in a compressed folder and add a password.  I don't believe that this method is overly secure (i don't think the file is encrypted) but it does allow you to password protect it.  The last link below shows how to use Word/Excel password.  Not sure how secure it is.  There are options such as TrueCrypt, but that can be difficult to setup and if you mess it up, you could lose all your files.
