  1. my son did not take to the pacifyer thing (thank god) i dont like them. but it is a mothers own opnion. I dont think children need one. My neices and nephews did it... they always did. I think it is more a attention getter. it does not look right so automatically we try to change it,... making a fuss and they think it is now a joke to change it and do it the *wrong* way.

I dont think it has to do with her pallet! something they like to do to be different!

  2. hello. my son uses the nuk binky also and he will suck on it any way he can get it in his mouth. he will seriously even put it in his mouth backwards so he's sucking on the handle part and if you try to switch it then he puts it back how he had it. i don't know why he does it but he likes to be in control of how he uses it. some babies just have their own unique way of doing things i guess!

  3. My daughter just started taking her passie at 18 mo. and she only sucks on it if it's upside down, too.  She flips it over even in her sleep!

  4. i was born with a hare lip and cleft palate - she probably flips it upside down so the bump on the bottom part will fill in the cleft and help her create a proper suction.

just make sure the pacifier is fit to her mouth - go by the size, not by the age on the package.  my niece is a very petite little girl, 27lb at 3yrs, and my sister would buy according to her age, not her size.  the result was she looked like she was sucking on a hub cap and now she has an open bite - that's basically an incurable problem: braces will put the teeth back into position but enlarge the tooth socket and she will probably unconsciously push the teeth back out of alignment by worrying at them with her tongue.

  5. honestly my niece used to do this when she was little.  I don't understand why, but it didn't disturb tooth development or anything.

with your daughters cleft pallet I suggest asking the doctor about it.  i don't see it being a big deal though.  if it makes her happy just roll with it

  6. My daughter was born with a cleft lip and palate as well..We tried to use the Nuk pacifier as well..As you know, they have no suction so you (or they if they are old enough) have to hold it in there..One nurse told us to actually use the Nuk upside down..I guess it's supposed to be more comfortable..With the way it's shaped, they get a little more of the "soothing sucking" out of it..Hopefully that makes sense..You put it the right way, the bulk of it lays in their cleft..If it's upside down, they can wrap their tongue around the bulk of the pacifier to suck..I was glad she didn't catch on..I can't imagine having to go through palate surgery and having to take it away..
