I lived at an apartment complex for 1 yr and I had 2 roommates (college apartments). Well my roommates moved out and when it was time for me to move out the apartment company charged me with everything. I disputed the charges but they didn't make any changes so they sent my case to the collection agency. Now I can't get an apartment b/c the new apartments are saying that I owe the other apartment complex money. I would pay the money but I don't believe it is right that they only charged me with everything, what do I do?

  1. Were all three of you on the lease?

If so, sue your former roommates in small claims court (or regular court, depending on the amount) for their fair share. It will not endear them to you, but they should have paid their share in the first place.

FWIW, college landlords learned the hard way to collect from or charge whoever they could find, usually the last to leave.

  2. What names were on the lease? All parties listed should be responsible. If yours was the only name on the lease, you’re the only one responsible.
