  1. PAST novelists?  My goodness, there's a surprise.  Writing about future novelists is all the rage now...

J.K. Rowling and C. S. Lewis were both british.

  2. Off the top of my head, I suggest:

    Robert Graves ('I, Claudius')

    Elizabeth Gaskell ('North and South')

JRR Tolkien ('Lord of the Rings')

EM Forster ('A Room with a View')

    Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë

    George Eliot ('Middlemarch')

    Evelyn Waugh ('Brideshead Revisited')

    Daniel Defoe ('Robinson Crusoe')

Agatha Christie ('Murder on the Orient Express')

    Dorothy Sayers ('The Nine Tailors')

    W. Somerset Maugham ('The Razor's Edge')

    Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley ('Frankenstein')

Julian of Norwich ('Revelations of Divine Love'; she was the first woman to have a book published in the English language)

You should be able to find quotes & passages at Amazon.com, Bartlett's, the Guttenberg Project, and even Wikipedia.

  3.      Get onto the Internet, love.  Write 'British novelists' in your search and you'll have as many as you want.

    Good luck

    Mike B

  4. J.K. Rowling, Agatha Christie, George Orwell.
