Past winners of the Monmouth Stakes clash in a tough field of eight
The Grade 2 Monmouth Stakes this year has reeled in a solid field of 8 older, seasoned horses to run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles over the Monmouth Park’s turf course on 10 June, 2012.
Among the eight entries, two of them have already won the race’s previous two editions. Trained by Thomas M. Bush for Sullimar Stables, the 6-year-old horse, Get Stormy, won the 2010 edition of the stakes race, while the 9-year-old gelded son of Royal Anthem,
Presious Passion won it in 2009.
Bred in Kentucky by Mary A. Sullivan, Get Stormy has started twice this year, and currently he is in great form, as he demonstrated it in his seasonal debut when he landed the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap on 11 February, 2012, at about 1 1/8 miles
on turf.
The Stormy Atlantic colt, defeated Hollinger and Big Blue Kitten in the stretch, who finished second and third, respectively, as Get Stormy wrapped it up in 1 minute and 53.78 seconds.
Get Stormy attempted to win the Grade 1 Maker’s 46 Mile for the second year running at a mile, but failed to post back to back victories in the Maker’s Mile, as he finished a strong fourth to winner, Data Link at Keeneland’s turf course, as Turallure finished
second.
The son of War Front, Data Link has been entered in the Grade 2 Monmouth Stakes, and will be looking to post back to back victories.
On the other hand, Presious Passion’s current form is nothing to write home about, as he started off the season in a disappointing manner, with a seventh place finish in the Elkwood Stakes at Monmouth Park on 19 May, 2012, at a mile.
Trained by Mary Hartman for Patricia A. Generazio, Presious Passion capped off his 2011 season with a fifth place finish to winner, Caracortado, in the Sunshine Millions Turf at about 1 1/8 miles over the Santa Anita Park’s unique hillside turf course.
Monmouth Park Stakes has also reeled in the Three Coins Up Stakes winner, Mahubo, who is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, and the 6-year-old gelding relished his opportunity against stakes-company, and might spur up a surprise or two in the Monmouth Stakes.
