  1. Pasteur used flasks with long, thin necks, called swan-necked flasks.  He sterilized meat broth in two identical flasks by boiling for several hours.  After boiling, he heated the neck of one flask and bent it so it was curved.  The other he left straight.  He reasoned that if life arose from non-life, than both flasks should grow bacteria.  If the bacteria came from outside (the air), then only the straigt-necked flask should grow (the swan neck forming a trap for airborne bacteria).

    Only the straight-necked flask grew.
