Pastor Maldonado celebrates his victory at the Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Pastor Maldonado was over the moon as he celebrated his maiden victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Maldonado did well to control the race and not let Fernando Alonso overtake him. The Spaniard looked to close in on him at the final stages of the race but the Venezuelan kept his cool and finished off the race in style.
Alonso was hampered by tyre degradation and that allowed Maldonado to keep the gap between them. Maldonado explained that the team had already planned to save the tyres in the race and that he would be able to push hard later on in the race. Alonso did
get very close to him and he was able to move away from him with better tyres than the Ferrari.
“There were some moments where he was so close especially at end of the straight, but I was managing the gap and controlling everything. Our pace today was very strong, the car was fantastic, so was the team. We did a small mistake at the last pit stop but
it didn't affect our performance,” Maldonado said.
“It was a tough race because of the strategy as well, it was hard especially because of rear tyres, after a couple of laps we were struggling with them, but I need to say I am pretty happy because car was so competitive since the first lap,” he added.
Maldonado expressed his delight and mentioned that the win has shown how the team has progressed so far in the season and Williams are looking to improve with each passing race. He admitted that 2011 was not a good season for the team and the dismal show
in the previous season motivated the team to better their performances for the current season.
The team has been pushing really hard to come up with good results and this has been a confirmation of the hard work put in by the team members. Now the team needs to keep up with the same working regime and try to be as consistent as they can from here
on and hopefully look to go for the championship.
