Pastor Maldonado might replace Nico Hulkenberg
Nico Hulkenberg stated that he hopes to maintain his seat with Williams despite the reports stating that Nico might be replaced by the GP2 champion Pastor Maldonado in Williams for the 2011 Formula 1 season.
According to a Brazilian magazine, Maldonado has already signed a deal for the next Williams driver alongside Rubens Barrichello and will bring EUR 15 million of sponsorship from his state-owned petroleum company PDVSA. This is big news and since the magazine
states that Maldonado has already signed the deal with the team, Nico Hulkenberg will have to find a new team or think up a “Plan-B” now.
However, Nico Hulkenberg is still hopeful that he can hold on to his seat in Williams for 2011. Now seriously, that was quite a childish statement from the German. If Maldonado has already signed a contract with Williams, why doesn’t he look for another
team instead?
“I think both sides are still interested in each other and I'm quite confident that we will get together but there is nothing official or nothing I can openly talk about. What I can say is that I think the best for me and my development and everything...
my point of view is that I really would like to stay with Williams, because the car can be competitive next year,” said Hulkenberg.
Although team Williams is facing the prospect of losing some major sponsors by the end of this season, Hulkenberg stated that he is still willing to driver for the team but will not bring any money to retain his spot.
“I don't want to be a driver who gets a seat because of money. I never wanted to, it's not my intention. For me talent counts, I hope for the team too. For me the sooner the decision is taken the better, but there's a lot of travelling now and so it's more
difficult. I think it will take a few weeks,” he added.
This was quite immature of Nico because he should be aware that a team cannot participate in the Formula 1 season without a yearly financial budget. Nico should have at least thought about what he was saying as this statement might cost him his seat.
