Pat Fry says wet circuits have helped Fernando Alonso in leading the championship – Formula 1 news
Technical chief of Ferrari Pat Fry believes that wet circuits have helped Fernando Alonso attaining the lead in the 2012 Formula 1 championship.
Talking about the Malaysian Grand Prix, the technical chief said with certainty that if the circuit was dry, results of the race would have been different. Alonso won the Malaysian GP after starting at the 8th grid place.
Fry told Autosport.com, “Obviously, if it had been a completely dry race in Malaysia, it would have been a different story. I don't think we can hide behind the fact that the weather has helped us out.”
Furthermore, he said that currently Ferrari is not the quickest car on dry circuits but Alonso was able to make it convincingly because of the rain. It was more impressive at Silverstone and Hockenheim when Alonso made it first to the pole position and later
to the first place on the podium.
Moreover, he said that the team needs to keep working to keep the lead although it was lucky that they got the wet circuit in their favour but the conditions were same for all the teams racing.
“We just need to keep working at it. We're fortunate to be where we are - some of that is luck with the weather but then everyone's got those conditions. They've got to go and make the most of it,” he said. “Yes, we were helped by the weather, but then why
didn't other people take advantage of it?”
At Silverstone, the Spanish driver was able to get the pole position however, he could not win the race and finished second.
The German Grand Prix was all about Alonso. He started the race from pole position and won the race with a lead of 6.9 seconds from Jenson Button of McLaren.
At Hungaroring, Alonso could not retain his winning streak and was dropped to 5th position in the race. He could not give impressive result in the qualifiers as well and could only secure 6th place on grid.
Let’s see how he fares in the remainder of the season.
