Pat Shurmur receives owner Mike Holmgren’s assurance for longer stay at Browns – NFL news
Cleveland Browns’ coach Pat Shurmur has received backing from his employer Browns owner Mike Holmgren for a long time stay at the Browns.
Holmgren said that the business at Browns was as usual and there was no need to change their head coach, adding that young Shurmur will stay with them for a longer period of time.
He was addressing a news conference prompted by the injury of their quarterback Colt McCoy and consequent handling of his affair by them.
He spoke to media after National Football League (NFL) and NFL Players Association (NFLPA) officials had meeting with Browns medical staff and team management.
He said that they were absolutely clear about their coaching position confirming that Pat Shurmur will definitely be with them in the next football season.
Holmgren said that (Shurmur) was "a very competent young head coach who will be here for a long time."
He also refuted the suggestion that certain changes were being discussed at the Browns, which included release of their head coach, saying there was no discussion on any such options.
Browns 4-9 have been through lots of ups and down and their performance has apparently gone down the mark prompting speculations that they might do away with their coach.
Browns lately had been surrounded by injuries to their number of players and consequent controversy of their handling. They currently are a subject of NFL and NFLPA review over handling Colt McCoy issue. The player was allowed
to resume his game despite suffering concussion.
Pat Shurmur had come under fire over his role in permission to Colt McCoy to return to the side after being out for four minutes. This further put pressure on the coach and possibly making Browns to think of their options about
him.
Browns owner while defending his coach over handling of McCoy affair, said that their medical staff and trainer Joe Sheehan who could not realize the player’s injury impact. Medical staff and trainer were busy in attending to other
injured players on the sideline and therefore could not witness the hit and realized impact, he added.
He did not foresee any penalty to his side by the NFL as an outcome of its inquiry.
