Pat Smullen: The jewel of Galway Races
Six victories in first five days of the Galway Races 2012 is indeed an outstanding feat that has been proudly accomplished by Pat Smullen, the stable jockey to the legendary Irish trainer Dermot K. Weld. The 35-year-old legendary rider is regarded as one
of the Irish greats of all times. A big part of the recent horseracing history is associated with him.
From July 30 to August 3, 2012, Pat Smullen elegantly drove six star runners to win the glorious contests of the Galway Races festival.
On the opening day, the Weld trained bay gelding, Thunder Mountain, marvellously bagged the title of the claregalwayhotel.ie (C & G) European Breeders Fund Maiden under Smullen. Despite being a non-favourite candidate, he thrived convincingly due to the
excellent guidance of the rider.
On the very next day, another trainee of Weld, Voleuse De Coeurs, finished first in the Topaz Handicap with the perfect drive of Smullen.
On August 1, Smullen rode the American horse, Diplomat, to win the Tote Trifecta Rollover Handicap by beating the hot favourite runner Our Conor. On the same day, he took Tandem to thrive in the Tote Return All Profits To Irish Racing Maiden.
Smullen led Muaanid to win the Guinness 17:59 European Breeders Fund Median Auction Maiden in his very maiden outing on August 3. He also helped Mimosa to break her maiden with the title of the Guinness European Breeders Fund Maiden.
These half a dozen triumphs speak volumes of the jockey’s matchless and fantastic riding skills.
Born on May 22, 1977, Smullen was inclined towards horseracing from the very childhood. His interest in the sport grew up with age. After getting some initial training, he joined Weld’s stable.
Both Weld And Smullen has jointly achieved many iconic feats. The duo is well-known in the horseracing world. They participate in every high-profile event of Ireland, Great Britain and USA.
In fact, they are two bright starts glittering on the sky of the Irish horseracing. Smullen is expected to make more marks in the months to come. It will not be wrong to say that Weld’s stable is incomplete without Smullen.
