Pat White’s roster spot in jeopardy with Miami
Pat White’s days as a Dolphin may be numbered. As Miami heads into their third preseason game and more cuts are to be made soon, head coach Tony Sparano says he does not expect White to play this Friday against Atlanta. That would raise questions about his roster spot.
Sparano has said he will keep three quarterbacks on the final roster and White is currently the fourth quarterback on the depth chart behind starter Chad Henne, Chad Pennington, and Tyler Thigpen. He would likely be the odd man out. He has had a disappointing training camp, struggling with his accuracy, and is also coming off a disappointing rookie season.
White was primarily used in some wildcat plays last year in limited action with the Dolphins. His playing time came mostly in the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers before he was hit hard in a helmet-to-helmet collision. White suffered a concussion and was unconscious on the turf for several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher.
White’s struggles have continued with his play. Many have already questioned whether the Dolphins wasted a second-round draft pick on him last year. In college at West Virgina, White was seen as a great rushing quarterback and very talented, but many questioned his consistency in the passing game and didn’t think he’d pan out as a quarterback in the NFL. His critics may be proven right if he is cut by the Dolphins and doesn’t see any action this year.
Training camp has not done White well as his accuracy has not improved and has taken only three snaps in all of the preseason. Those three snaps came in the opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. White also didn’t see any action against the Jacksonville Jaguars this past weekend. He may not have much further use for the Dolphins unless they would use him in the wildcat formation. With a passing game expected to improve and an already dominant running game, there just doesn’t seem to be enough room for White.
