Pataky Kid working well ahead of the Breeders’ Futurity
Swiftly Farms owned, Pataky Kid is pointed toward the Grade 1, $400,000 Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity on 6 October, 2012, and victory in the 1 1/16 mile event will ensure an automatic berth in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on 3 November, 2012, because the Breeders’ Futurity is the “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Trained by Thomas F. Proctor, Pataky Kid has two victories in three starts so far, and he is currently exiting a victory in the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Futurity over at a mile at Arlington Park, where he defeated Muppet Man in second and Stormin Monarcho in third.
The 2-year-old Rockport Harbor colt, has been successful on synthetic surfaces, and has maintained a perfect record on the surface with 2 victories in as many starts.
Out of Gold Case mare Prom Princess, Pataky Kid made his debut over the Churchill Downs’ dirt track, and over the 6 furlong distance he finished third on the day, failing to break his maiden at first asking.
"He ran a good race at Churchill and I guess he was bet down at Arlington because of that race," Proctor said of Pataky Kid, who arrived at Keeneland last Wednesday from Chicago. "I don't think the surface matters. I think he can run on anything."
Pataky Kid was sent as the 42 to 1 longshot on 1 July, but showed talent on the field and closed in on the leaders to post a strong third place finish. Pataky Kid broke his maiden on 9 August, 2012, at Arlington Park over poly track going seven furlongs after being sent as the 5 to 2 choice.
Thomas Proctor worked Pataky Kid on 1 October. He turned in five furlongs 1:00 3/5 seconds ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Futurity.
Working on his own, Pataky Kid’s work was broken down into fractions, as he took 24 1/5 seconds to down the quarter mile, and 48 2/5 seconds for the half mile. He concluded by galloping out 6 furlongs in 1 minute and 15 1/5 seconds.
"He looked like he had wings out there," trainer Tom Proctor said with a laugh. "He went really good and Paco Lopez will ride him Saturday."
