Pataudi refuses to join IPL governing council
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 (BCCI), thus following the footsteps of another former Indian captain,
Sunil Gavaskar, who had refused to join the council.
Both, Pataudi and Gavaskar, along with Ravi Shastri were a part of the IPL governing council in the first three editions of the tournament. However, after the BCCI decided to make changes to the governing council, only Shastri decided to join the council.
One of the major bones of contention is the salary issue. In the first three editions of the tournament, the three former cricketers, Gavaskar, Shastri and Pataudi were paid a sum of Rs. 1 crore ($220,000) each, per annum to be a part of the council. However,
according to the new constitution, none of the council members will be paid any salary and the posts will be honorary ones.
Speaking to an Indian newspaper, the Indian Express, Pataudi confirmed that the new terms were the reasons for his withdrawal from the governing council. Pataudi said, "I have written a letter to the BCCI which states that I do not wish to continue with the
governing council. Earlier I was on a contract with the IPL, but the new changes are unacceptable for me. So, I have decided to move on."
The BCCI had also brought about some other changes to the council. They had done away with the previous governing council that included Lalit Modi and some of the other members apart from the three cricketers. Instead, the new council was to have half the number
of members and no Modi. Chirayu Amin was to be the chairman of the IPL council, but the tenure of the chairman was reduced from five years to one year.
