Patents made in Canada?

How do I patent some Intellectual property in Canada. Let's say I have an idea on paper and it's a product idea I think is good how would I go about patenting this? Also would it be good in the states and if not how would could I also get one in the states?

  1. The short answer is you file an application with the Canadian Patent Office.

    The longer answer is find a Canadian Patent Lawyer and seek his or her help.

    No, a Canadian Patent would not have any effect in the U.S. At least not the kind you're thinking of.  For that you need a U.S. Patent.  Your Canadian Lawyer will probably have contacts in the U.S and he will oversee the filing of an application in the U.S.

    I'm sure the Canadian Patent Office has a web page.  Try Googling it.
