Question:

Paternity testing and insurance companies

Has anyone heard of health insurance companies requesting a DNA test in order for the child to be on his/her's insurance plan? Me and my fiance recently had a child and he claims that his insurance won't allow our daughter on his insurance as a dependent without a paternity test. Just seems a little weird to me. Not that I care, I more than willing to provide the evidence, but they're supposedly not even paying for it!

  1. It's not an uncommon practice. My husband is in the military. the insurance that they have (called TriCare) requires ANY dependant of a military service member who is concieved out of wedlock have a DNA test done before coverage begins.

there are ways of getting coverage for the mother before birth too, but im not familar w/that since my husband and i were married before we had our kids together.

as for the insurance not paying for it...sounds about right.

some insurance companies agree to pay for it IF the results are Positive that the father is the insured, but if the test comes back negative they wont cover the cost, while other companies flat out wont pay for it, but wont cover you unless the test is done.

    rock/hard place!

  2. If you two are not unmarried yet then that is not an uncommon practice.

  3. I always thought the declaration of paternity was enough.  But I guess if they want a test AND they aren't paying for it, then you can only guess they are cheap and stingy.
