Patrice Evra defends Manchester United ambition
Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has defended his side’s ambition, claiming that he is with the English Premier League giants "to win trophies".
Evra’s comments come in the wake of Wayne Rooney’s announcement that he wants to leave the club, after the striker claimed that the Red Devils were not capable of matching his ambitions, stating, "...it’s all about winning trophies."
The England international revealed that he would not be signing an extension to his contract, which runs out in 2012.
Evra hit back at the 24-year-old’s claims, claiming that winning titles was of the utmost importance for all of the club’s players, and that the squad had no excuses if they failed to earn silverware, and added that the Rooney situation was between the player
and the manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
"I've been here for four years and every time, until last year, I have won the league. (Rooney’s comments) hurt-this is Manchester United and we must win trophies. That is the pressure of playing here."
"No team is better than us at the moment – you may think I'm crazy, but I say it because it's true. Manchester belong[s] at the top and I'm confident we can do that. We need to be professional. We need to perform – I don't like excuses about what's going
on around the club. Everyone needs to focus on themselves."
"The situation with Wayne Rooney is for the boss, not for the players. We are just focused on winning games and bringing back the winning mentality. The target for us is to win back the title and we are focused on doing that. I trust everyone, so let's keep
going."
United are currently sitting in fourth place in the league with 14 points, tied with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, but five points behind leaders Chelsea.
