Patricia Mayr-Achleitner humbles Petra Martic to advance into third round – Gastein Ladies 2011
Patricia Mayr-Achleitner of Austria overwhelmed Croat tennis pro Petra Martic 6-1, 6-4 on Thursday to book her place in the third round of 2011 NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies in Austria.
Entering the Women’s Tennis Association tournament as a wild card entrant, Mayr-Achleitner will be absolutely delighted with her effort after she made it to the pre-quarterfinals at the clay courts of Bad Gastein.
Looking in an aggressive mood right from the start of the match, the Austrian dropped only a single game in the opening set to take the set score lead 1-0.  A good fight back from Martic was witnessed in the following set. However
she failed to recover from the blows inflicted on her by the challenger and conceded the match in straight sets.
Ranked 109th in the world, Mayr-Achleitner made a strong start to the match as she broke the serve in the very first game of the opener to dent her opponent’s confidence levels. Putting up a great show in front of her
home crowd, the 24-year-old Austrian dashed her wonderful forehand and backhand winners all over the court. Not allowing her opponent any sort of room, she wrapped up the opener in a blink of an eye with in first 25 minutes.
Martic regrouped herself a bit in the second set as she created some problems for the Austrian with her strong baseline play. Her on-court movement was better and she hit the ball with more confidence. Holding on to her first four
serve games, she managed to even the game score at 4-4.
Mayr-Achleitner concentrated on her own game play and made most of the available opportunities. Converting her first break chance in ninth game of the set, she took a tricky 5-4 lead, serving for the match. Blasting a big forehand
winner cross court, she completed her straight sets victory in a match that lasted for only 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Hitting 77 per cent first serve, Mayr-Achleitner helped her cause with her consistent serving. She was brave enough to take her chances on her second serve as well, which paid off big time as she clinched 91 per cent of the points
on second serve. Martic struggled in the serve department of the game as she managed only a mere 44 per cent first serve. She also made six costly double faults at crucial situations during the match and hence paid the price.
Mayr-Achleitner has given decent results on the WTA tour since the year 2011 has started. She will be hoping to maintain her current level of play to lift her first ever WTA trophy on her home soil.
