Patricia Mayr-Achleitner shocks Yanina Wickmayer in round one – Fes WTA 2012
Austrian underdog, Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, jolted down the fourth seed, Yanina Wickmayer, in straight sets at the Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem 2012, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event held in Fes, Morocco. She registered
a 6-4, 6-2 victory against the 22-year-old to cruise into the second round on Monday.
Mayr-Achleitner stomped over the world number 31 in one hour and 19 minutes after showing top class performance at this clay court event. She warded off five out of seven breakpoints she faced and capitalised on five out of six break opportunities to earn
the fame book a spot in the proceeding round.
The 25-year-old made a shaky entry at the Royal Tennis Club de Fes and suffered the first blow in the second game to fall at 0-3. After trailing at 1-4, Mayr-Achleitner unleashed barrage of groundstrokes to wipe out the following five games in a row, subsequently
sealing the opener by winning six games to four.
Ranked 101st in the WTA Premier Rankings, Mayr-Achleitner kept momentum floating into the follow-up set and earned the desiderated break in the opening game to take the initial lead. Despite losing her edge in the very next game and trailing at
1-2, the Austrian went into a five game killing spree again and pulled out the set with a 6-2 score line.
All in all, the unseeded Austrian clobbered a better first serve share of 77 per cent as compared to her opponent’s 65 per cent and brilliantly availed 29 out of 44 points on it. She also committed only a single double fault and clinched the match with 69
points.
Next challenge for Mayr-Achleitner is the winner of the match between Georgia’s Anna Tatishvili and the Spanish qualifier, Garbine Muguruza Blanco.
The sixth seed, Chanelle Scheepers form South Africa, also earned the glory earlier that day. She got the better of Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova in straight sets in their second meeting. Scheepers broke her opponent’s serve five times to not only avenge
her loss at the Albuquerque WTA event seven years ago but also secure a place in the round of 16.
