Patricia Mayr-Achleitner upsets Lourdes Lino to advance into the 2nd round – Gastein Ladies 2011
Wild card entrant Patricia Mayr-Achleitner stunned number five seed Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain 6-0, 7-6 (5) on Tuesday to book her place in the second round of 2011 NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies in Bad Gastein, Hungary. Mayr-Achleitner
looked in stunning form in her opening match at the tournament as she required only 1 hour and 42 minutes dispatching her opponent.
The Austrian tennis pro looked to attack her opponent right from the start of the match. Breaking serve early in the opening set, she put herself in the driving seat. Forcing errors from her opponent, she made her opponent pay
heavily for her mistakes. Mayr-Achleitner did not drop a single game to wrap up the opener and take the set score lead 1-0.
Dominguez, who‘s game play was below average in the first set, raised the level of her game in the following set. Showing amazing fighting abilities and determination, she forced the set into a tie-breaker. Both contestants broke
the serve at regular intervals in the set but it was Mayr-Achleitner who overcame her nerves and held onto her composure as she clinched three straight points in the tie-breaker to ensure her victory in straight sets.
Ranked 109 in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings, Mayr-Achleitner was absolutely delighted with her effort. Defeating a player ranked much higher than her in the world rankings will surely give her confidence in her abilities
and game play. Her strong and accurate serving proved to be the main difference between the two tennis pros at the end of the day. Hitting 70 per cent first serve, she managed to take control of the big points from the start as she pushed her opponent right
back to the baseline.
Securing more than 61 per cent of the point in the serve return department of the game, she showed some great clay court skills at the receiving end.  Scoring seven out of thirteen break points in the match, she made most of the
available opportunities.
Seeded fifth at the competition, Lino succumbed to pressure as she failed to hold on to her serve games in the opening set. It will not be wrong to say that she was wasteful on her serves early on. However, known for her fighting
spirit, Lino is expected to come back strongly on her next WTA appearance.
Having won 25 out of 43 matches so far in the running season, Mayr-Achleitner is improving with every match that she has played on the tour. If she can maintain her current form in her upcoming matches at the tournament, she could
cause some real threats to other top seeded players as well.
