Patrick Byrne training the next Kentucky Derby star in, Positively
Trainer Patrick Byrne had attached high hopes with his ace Kentucky Derby contender, Take Charge Indy, but the dark bay son of A. P. Indy could do no better than finishing 19th in a field of 20 horses on 5 May, 2012, at Churchill Downs.
Though, Take Charge Indy is out of action due to an injury he incurred running in the Run for the Rosesm but Byrne’s chances of securing the Derby this year have gone along with Take Charge Indy, though the trainer is looking at the 2013 Kentucky Derby and
he has just the horse to bank his hopes on.
Chuck and Maribeth Sandford LLC owned, Positively is Byrne’s new ace, who is expected to do far more better than Take Charge Indy did in this year’s Derby race.
And what better place to start his Derby quest than the home of Kentucky Derby itself. The Churchill Downs is the venue chosen for the son of Distorted Humor to start his racing career from, and he will be running in his debut on 18 May, 2012.
Out of Mr. Prospector mare Macoumba, Positively is bred in Kentucky by Malibu Farms, but the thing that excites more about Positively is that the colt is a half brother of one of the leading sire in America, Malibu Moon.
"He's my next Derby hopeful," trainer Pat Byrne said. "He acts like he wants the distance, he's a grand looking horse and he has a great pedigree."
Positively had started preparing for his debut race, when he arrived on 1 May, 2012, and under the Twin Spires the 2-year-old colt has turned in two works so far.
His most recent work consisted of five furlongs, where under jockey Calvin Borel, the duo drilled five furlongs in an impressive 1 minute and 2 seconds, which shows that the colt is ready to run.
"I don't know if he's quick enough (to win) going five-eighths, but I think he'll show some ability," the horseman explained. "I kind of wish the race was at six furlongs, but that would require waiting and the horse has been ready to run for the last six
weeks.”
