Patrick Cantlay receives Ben Hogan Award – Golf News
Patrick Cantlay, a sophomore at the University of California, Los Angeles, has been awarded with the 2012 Ben Hogan Award in a live ceremony held at the Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worth, Texas on Monday, May 21, 2102.
Cantlay has now become the only sophomore to receive this prestigious award, and the youngest since Rickie Fowler earned it in 2008 as a freshman at the Oklahoma State University.
"This is great, especially after coming up short last year," said Cantlay, who was a Hogan Award finalist last year too. "There's three really good amateurs here and I feel fortunate that I'm the one they picked. It's an honor to be here with them".
According to Cantlay, he has been working hard continuously in order to get the maximum out of his game.
Last year, following the Hogan Award ceremony, he appeared in the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships and led the Bruins to victory.
In addition to that, he also stood second in the 2011 US Amateur Championship and 21st in the 2011 US Open that earned him the low amateur honours in the end.
According to Cantlay, he does not feel much bothered on the difficult courses, especially with fast greens. He believes that the hard courses suits his style of play and that is the major reason of his success in major events around the world.
"I feel comfortable on tough golf course with fast greens," Cantlay said. "That's a premium at the majors. So when I get out on hard golf courses, I think it suits my game. I feel good when par is a good score on every hole".
Currently, he aims to participate in the 2012 US Open and 2012 British Open where he plans to outshine his opponents with his offensive game play.
He is now ranked as the best golfer in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and the Scratch Players World Amateur Rankings.
After beating Jordan Spieth and Patrick Rodgers in the voting for the Ben Hogan Award, his ratings have gone up among the golf communities around the world.
