Patrick Kane scores on final attempt to lead Chicago Blackhawks past Anaheim Ducks 3-2 in shootout
Chicago made a late comeback as Patrick Sharp made the equaliser in round-three of the contest to force an overtime extension and Patrick Kane scored on their final attempt in a shootout to lead the Blackhawks past the Anaheim Ducks, 3-2, on Tuesday night,
October 25, at the sold-out United Center in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
The Blackhawks have not won more than two matchups before losing the third and hope to continue winning this time around as they eye their second Stanley Cup championship since the 2010 playoffs.
It might have looked like just some good luck, but according to Patrick Kane, who made the game-winner on Anaheim goalie, Jonas Hiller, it took a lot more planning than expected.
"We studied the shootout", said Kane, who beat Hiller with a backhand move. "We studied the goalie today and it obviously paid off. (Toews') goal was beautiful. He waited (Hiller) out, put it upstairs. I tried to do something a little bit different. I knew
(Hiller) was an opposite-hand goalie, so his stick kind of wouldn't be there when I came across, and it worked out I guess”.
The scoring started in the second period as Ryan Getzlaf kicked it off with his third of the season 58 seconds in on a power play opportunity that carried over from the first period as Dave Bolland was penalised for slashing at the 19:53 mark with a minor.
Marian Hossa potted his fifth nearly midway through, only to be followed by Anaheim’s veteran forward, Teemu Selanne, nearly six minutes later to once again take the lead.
Jamal Mayers and Sheldon Brookbank forced the home crowd to stand on their feet as they exchanged fists six minutes into the second and were booked with a five-minute major for fighting.
Patrick Sharp scored the last regulation goal early in the third to send the 21,000 plus crowd into a wild roar of joy, assisted by Patrick Kane.
Blackhawks captain, Jonathan Toews, made their first attempt in the shootout after a scoreless overtime extension but Teemu Selanne answered back on their second chance to level it.
Getzlaf missed on Anaheim’s last, putting all the weight on Patrick Kane’s shoulder, which he managed to pull through and make one for the home crowd.
Carolina Hurricanes will be hosting the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday, while the Anaheim Ducks will continue their four-game road trip against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday.
