Patrick Lane wins third stage of the Friuli Venezia Giulia 2011 Tour – Cycling news
Patrick Lane of the Jayco A.I.S Team won the white jersey of the Friuli Venezia Giulia 2011.
The race started in Fagagna and ended at Tarviso. The Australian rider Patrick Lane took a total of 3 hours, 36 minutes and 58 seconds to cover the distance of 153.6 kilometres.
His teammates showed a good performance in the closing kilometres. Patrick Lane crossed the line comfortably ahead of Romain Bardet of the Chambery Cyclisme Formation team.
Patrick’s teammate Jay McCarthy was in third spot while Consolato Panto finished fourth.
Mikhail Akimov also put up a good performance in the race but he was not able to cross the group of eight riders and finished 10th with a difference of 5 seconds.
After the seven kilometres of the stage, the group of nine riders including Maxim Razumov (Katusha), Carlos Alexandre Mannarelli (General Ballan), Sebastian Balck (Sweden), Philip Fortin and Edoardo Costanzi made the first break.
All of them gained a maximum advantage of 2 minutes and 30 seconds before the group organised the tracking after 114 kilometres.
There were two mountains and two sprints in the stage. In the first sprint of the race, Italian rider Filippo Fortin was taking a lead ahead of Carlos Alexandre and Alessio Menciassi.
When the race entered in the second sprint in Amaro, all of them maintained their lead and the result remained the same as it was in the previous sprint.
However, in the last kilometres of the race, the Australian rider Patrick Lane maintained his speed and crossed the finish line ahead of the other riders.
After winning the stage he said, “Every year my team is in Italy between May and June to run and train, I had tried this climb, I had only studied dall'altimetria. We came here to win the Tour tomorrow and will try all out to take the white jersey.”
Matteo Busato of the Zalf Deriree team took a lead in the general classification with a timing of 10 hours, 41 minutes and 32 seconds. Patrick Facchini was in second spot with a difference of 29 seconds while Jan Polanc finished third.
The next stage will start in Arta Terme and end in Osoppo. All the riders will cover the distance of 156.6 km.
