Patrick Lefevere believes Mark Cavendish has already signed with Team Sky – Cycling News
Mark Cavendish has not confirmed his future as Team Sky confirmed the news that they have come to an agreement with the cyclist. Cavendish currently rides for team HTC-Highroad and had to decide his future team as HTC-Highroad has announced their demise
by the end of 2011.
There were rumours of Cavendish joining Omega Pharma-Quick Step for 2012 but Patrick Lefevere has denied the news. Cavendish has always been a World class player but his most recent performance at the UCI Elite Men’s Road Race has earned him a lot of fame.
Cavendish dominated the race as he managed to overcome the race favourites including Fabian Cancellara, Tyler Farrar and Philippe Gilbert. Cavendish started professional racing in 2005 with Team Sparkasse and has developed himself into a World class sprinter.
Patrick is the general manager of team Quick Step and has clarified that he never had any discussion with Cavendish about the issue lately. He told Het Nieuwsblad, “This season I have not yet exchanged three words with Cavendish. I have negotiated with his
friend and teammate Bernhard Eisel. He was quite clear to me and said: 'Sorry, but Mark needs to go to Sky for many reasons and I am going along. We have now been signed.' So, to my knowledge Cavendish is no longer free.”
The information of Cavendish joining Team Sky comes from someone who has built a good reputation in the game and it clarifies the ambiguities related to the World Champion’s future. The news however cannot be confirmed unless Team Sky makes it official or
Cavendish himself makes an announcement about the matter.
Brailsford mentioned that Team Sky will ensure that they do not leave any stone unturned to make sure that Cavendish dominates at the London Olympics. One main issue that lies between Cavendish and Team Sky is that the rider likes to use his personalised
bike however Team Sky has a contract with Pinarello.
The main reason behind the rumour of Cavendish joining Omega Pharma was because of the bike question. It will be interesting to see if Team Sky and Cavendish come to some sort of an agreement, as one thing is for certain that the Sky management is keen to
have the rider in their squad.
