Patrick Machugh – Keith Turnbull win Men’s Doubles crown at Yonex Activcity East of Scotland Senior
Scotland’s Patrick Machugh and Keith Turnbull displayed a spectacular performance on the final day and won the Men’s Doubles title at Yonex Activcity East of Scotland Senior 2012 on Sunday, March 18, in Scotland.
In the final showdown, Patrick and Keith defeated their higher ranked opponents Peter Hockey and Duncan Leith who were the top seeds in the Men’s Doubles draw of the tournament.
Patrick and Keith, who were the second seeds, showed their mental strength and physical fitness and defied all odds to clinch the title with a tight margin.
The second seeds consumed 48 minutes to beat their higher ranked opponents in an entertaining three-set fight that kept the local fans engaged throughout the battle.
It was undeniably the most interesting and close fight of the final day in which both pairs showed their impressive fighting spirit throughout the contest and entertained the crowd until the last moment.
Right from the opening points, both pairs put up superb show of aggressive badminton and remained close on the score board as no side could manage a comfortable gap in the first half.
After the break, the match continued progressing in the similar fashion and the score reached at the ending phase when Patrick and Keith played a few fabulous shots and won the set with a close score of 21-19.
In the second set, both sides again put up tremendous show of fast badminton and kept on playing at their maximum speed.
They remained close in the opening half and also continued progressing in the same way until the score reached at 21-21. At this crucial stage, Patrick and Keith lost their focus and also lost the set with a margin of 21-23.
In the deciding game, Patrick and Keith tried to take an early lead but failed as their higher ranked opponents were also playing at the same speed. The score remained tight in the whole set until the ending points.
Both pairs reached at 20-20 when Patrick and Keith managed to score two consecutive points and won the set with a 22-20 score on the board.
Patrick and Keith emerged as the winners of this final encounter in three-games with a breath-taking margin of 21-19, 21-23 and 22-20.
