Patrick Reed makes a strong start at the Wells Fargo Championship despite tiring schedule – Golf News
For the second week in a row, Patrick Reed succeeded in qualifying for the PGA Tour event through Monday's qualifier, and teed off at the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday, May 6, 2012.
Last week, he appeared in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and performed surprisingly well to tie for the 24th position after carding a 10-under par tournament score.
For his amazing performance in the tournament, he earned $51,840, the biggest cheque of his career.
On the opening day at the Quail Hollow Country Club, he made a strong charge and carded a six-under par 66 to share the fourth place on the leaderboard.
According to Reed, he and his caddie and fiancée, Justine Karain, were feeling exhausted, entering the tournament because of the tiring schedule they have had in the past three weeks.
Apart from the two qualifications he made through Monday's qualifiers, he also participated in the Valero Texas Open as a sponsor exemption, after Peter Lonard withdrew from the event.
The tournament witnessed him earn an amount of $29,915 after he took the 35th spot on the leaderboard.
“That’s basically what jump started this whole entire run,” Reed said.
“We’re basically running on adrenaline,” Reed said. “We’re pretty tired. Actually, I’m not really getting to practice a lot after and before rounds here, trying to conserve energy because we’ve been running with our heads cut off for the past month”.
He also admitted that Karain played a major role in motivating him, especially when he felt tired or made a bad shot in the tournaments.
“She’s so positive with the whole thing,” Reed said. “If I hit a couple bad shots I’ll start to get down on myself and she’ll pick me right up immediately and won’t allow me to self-sabotage my round or any hole”.
Karain is basically a registered nurse and she believes that both of them make a good team together.
He said that whenever Reed misses a putt, she tries to motivate him with some positive words and ask him to continue to try for better shots.
If Reed continues to play the way he did in the opening round, he has a great chance to register a top-10 finish in the prestigious Wells Fargo Championship.
