Patriots, Brady closing in on 3-year extension
New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady, an eleven-year veteran and three-time Super Bowl Champion, is close to finalizing a three-year, $58 million extension with the club.
The Patriots offered the contract to Brady recently and he is believed to be close to signing the deal that will keep him in New England until 2014. Brady is meeting with Patriots officials and the deal could be finalized in the coming days.
During the summer, many Patriots have been vocal about their contract demands. Brady, who has destroyed club passing records, has wanted a new deal for the past couple of seasons. His star receiver, Randy Moss, recently announced his desire for a new contact, stating that he feels unwanted. To add to the trouble, Logan Mankins, the all-pro lineman for the Pats, said he is prepared to sit out the entire season if he doesn't get his contract demands. Mankins, a two-time all-pro, has been the leader on the offensive line for the Pats since he was drafted in 2005.
Brady is in the last year of his contract. As an extra incentive to keep Brady in the northeast, the Patriots found him some more offensive weapons during the summer. They added to the stable of threats already on the roster through the draft. In the 2010 NFL Draft, New England selected TE Rob Gronkoswki from Arizona, Aaron Hernandez from Florida, and WR Taylor Price from Ohio.
Brady, who was drafted in the sixth round by the Patriots out of Michigan in 2000, tossed 28 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last season.
He is a five time all-pro player, who has won numerous awards during his tenure for the AFC East squad.
The 33-year old made his debut for New England in 2000, leading them to a Super Bowl win two years later when starter Drew Bledsoe went down for the year.
