Paul Aiton seals two-year deal with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats
Papua New Guinea international hooker, Paul Aiton, who led his side in Four Nations 2010, has agreed to a two-year deal with the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
This is a useful addition to the Wakefield, who are on a recruiting spree ever since their Super League Licence until the end of 2014, was confirmed in September. Aiton is this year’s 17th uptake after Richard Agar slipped on the coaching hat in place of
John Kears at the end of this year.
This is not all. The Wakefield has also scooped up Richie Mathers, the Grand Final and Challenge Cup winner from the Castleford Tigers on a year loan period deal.
While expressing his views about the player, Agar said, “Paul is a tough and committed player with a real strength of character who plays the game very quick and direct. He's a proven performer in the NRL and on the international stage with PNG where he
has shown tremendous leadership qualities as their captain. As well as playing hooker, he'll fill a number of other roles for us too. He's a very experienced and high-quality performer.”
Aiton kicked off his rugby league career with the Penirth in 2006, where he earned 39 points, playing 70 games and scored only 8 tries with them. After that, he joined another National Rugby League (NRL) franchise, Cronulla-Sutherland, where he has played
39 games and ran in four tries for his side. He has been representing Papua New Guinea since 2004, and it appears that the player is satisfied with his decision to test his luck in Super League.
While talking about it, he added that he had certain goals, he wanted to achieve in the NRL and luckily he has accomplished them all. This explains why he is content with his decision of moving on to the next level.
He admitted that after achieving his NRL goals, he wanted to play Super League. He also had a number of options on the table but he opted for Wildcats out of them all, because after getting to know about Agar’s future planning, he knew that he wanted to
be there.
He went on and shared that Super League is faster around the ruck, which he believes will suit him a lot. He also shared that with him as part of the attacking Super League games, there can be more character and versatility introduced.
It will be interesting to see how well, the Papua International, gels in with the Super League platform, under Agar’s exceptional coaching skills. The club so far has been struggling in their game throughout the previous years but after Agar reigned in the
responsibility, it is expected that the same club will narrate a newer story.
