Paul Biedermann triumphs Men’s 200m freestyle - 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial
The world champion, Paul Biedermann, has won the gold medal in the Men’s 200m freestyle category on last day of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The championship is aimed towards the finalisation of the German national team, which will represent the country at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July.
SV Halle’s Biedermann owns the World, European and German record of the Men’s 200m freestyle, as he clocked 1:42.00 minutes at the 2009 World Championships in Rome.
The 24-year-old Biedermann claimed the title of the event by clocking in a time of 1:45.72 minute. The German was 3.72 seconds away from improving his personal records. He was almost two seconds away from his strongest rival, Tim Wallburger of SG Neukolln
e.V. Berlin, who claimed the silver medal with a time of 1:47.61 minutes. They were followed by Clemens Rapp of TSV Bad Saulgau, who was only 0.17 seconds away from Tim and settled on the podium for the bronze medal, posting 1:47.78 minutes.
The national champion finished his first lap of the 200m event in the seventh fastest place, submitting a time of 25.37 seconds. Tim’s team-member, Tom Siara, was sighted as the fastest swimmer in the first lap, as he clocked a time of 25.24 seconds. Wallburger
appeared as the second fastest swimmer, completing his initial lap in a time of 25.28 seconds.
In the next lap, Paul demonstrated his extraordinary swimming skills and engulfed the efforts of his fellow athletes, by completing the first round in a time of 52.11 seconds. He was followed by Clemens, who ended his initial round in 52.19 seconds and stayed
ahead of Tim, who posted a time of 52.37 seconds.
In the next lap, Biedermann sustained his fastest spot, while Tim moved up to the second spot, overwhelming Rapp with a timing of 1:19.82 minutes. Then, the swimmers sustained their positions in the final lap, where Biedermann claimed the national title
in 1:45.72 minutes.
Biedermann, who is the strongest hope of Germany Swimming, expressed that he is prepared to defend his titles at the 2011 World Championships.
