Paul Capdeville, Marsel Ilhan make it to the final round qualifiers – US Open 2011
Seeded at number two in the qualifying draws, Paul Capdeville of Chile, went through some tough time before he eventually defeated local Greg Ouellette in the second round of qualifying draws of the US Open on Thursday.
The contest was played on the hard courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with the Chilean contestant registering victory in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, to make it to the qualifying competition of the Grand Slam tournament.
Capdeville had a brilliant beginning in the opening set and nailed two serve breaks to the bleak American opponent, pocketing the set at 6-4 to get one up in the contest. Tide turned in the very next set when Ouellette came out firing at the Chilean, registering a crucial serve break in the fourth game to clinch the second set at 6-3, levelling the matchup with one set a piece.
It all came down to the final set to decider the winner of the match. Ouellette went through a terrible slump and was absolutely blown away by the powerful serve game of his opponent. Capdeville reeled off 13 out of 17 first serve points in the final set, breaking the American serve in the second and then again in the sixth game to conclude a comprehensive victory at 6-1.
The Chilean will take on Jean-Rene Lisnard of Poland in the next round to make it to the main draws of the US Open.
Third seeded Turk competitor, Marsel Ilhan, also cleared the second round of qualifying draws by defeating the Frenchman, Vincent Millot, to reach the qualifying competition. He took one hour and thirty minutes of play to conclude a straight sets victory at 6-2, 7-5, disposing of Millot from the race to the main draws of the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Ilhan fired five cracking aces and bagged 27 out of 35 first serve points in the matchup to come out as the winner. His 67 per cent serve remained unbroken in the entire matchup, while he nailed three out of seven break points en route to victory. Ilhan will take on 28th seed Lukas Lacko of Slovakia in his next matchup to fight for a berth in the main draws of the US Open. Lacko was successful against Marius Copil of Romania in the second round qualifiers.
