Paul Capdeville ousts Igor Kunitsyn in round one – Farmers Classic 2012
Chilean star, Paul Capdeville, ended his winning draught after overpowering the Russian challenger, Igor Kunitsyn, in straight sets at the Farmers Classic 2012 on Monday. He juggled up a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory against the world number 130 to power into the
second round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event held in Los Angeles, California.
Capdeville found his rhythm at this outdoor hard court tournament and outclassed the Russian veteran in straight sets in their first encounter. He last won a match in an ATP event at Santiago in 2010 and after pocketing this match, the Chilean took lead
in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the 30-year-old. He also progressed into the round of 16 at this Emirates Airline US Open series tournament.
The 29-year-old thundered into the Los Angeles Tennis Center after drawing first blood in the second game, he jumped to a 3-0 lead. Apart from losing his edge in the seventh game, Capdeville held his remaining serves and got the breakthrough in the last
game. He failed to block the lone breakpoint he faced but cashed in both break opportunities to record a 6-4 success.
Ranked 139th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Capdeville lost his path towards the second set and suffered the first blow in the third game to trail at 1-3. However, he maintained consistency in his game and not only recovered
in the eighth game but took the set to a tie-breaker. The Chilean outshined his rival in it and clicked the set with a 7-6(5) win.
Overall, the Chilean spilled several double faults but fired nine aces to cover it up. He also produced a slightly higher first serve share of 61 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 59 per cent and sealed the match with 83 points.
Next up for Capdeville is winner of the match between eighth seeded Brian Baker and his countryman, Rajeev Ram.
The Italian contender, Flavio Cipolla, will accompany Capdeville in the following round. He crushed the local wildcard entrant, Jack Sock, with a breadstick in one hour and nine minutes to steal the spotlight.
