Paul Casey grabs lead in second round of Frys.com Open while Tiger Woods survives the cut: Golf news
The second round of the Frys.com open was marred by thick fog that engulfed much of the course at the start of the day at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, California, as the round was delayed for more than two hours. Englishman, Paul Casey, who has been
battering form vows since the start of the year, pulled in a stellar performance for a score of seven-under, 64, to grab an outright lead through the halfway mark. He is now eight-under, 134, on the aggregate, leading the tournament by one shot.
Casey, who needs a strong finish to avoid losing his tour card at the end of the season, said, “To be honest, it's probably the best I've hit the golf ball all year.”
He has been struggling with a foot injury and had just landed from South Korea to attempt a victory here in the Fall Series event. His first round score was disappointing when he fell in for five bogeys, three of them coming right after another at the back
nine and he closed the day with one-under, 70, probably succumbing to jet lag. He made a quick recovery on Friday to pull in eight birdies and dropped just one shot at par-four, 14th.
Bud Cauley, who recently turned professional and veteran, Ernie Els carded rounds of five-under on the second day to push for the summit of the $5,000,000 event. Els carded five birdies in his near perfect round and he still has to tee-off for the last two
holes on the back nine. Cauley, who stumbled on a bogey at the very first hole of the event, did well to avoid anymore of the mires ahead and pulled in six birdies to finish one shot behind the leader.
Tiger Woods, as usual, grabbed major chunk of the crowds who followed him on the sprawling fairways throughout his second round. Falling for a lopsided two-over, 73, on the first day, Woods needed a strong second round to make it through the halfway cut,
and carded a score of three-under, 68, to finally make it through the weekend.
Woods said, “I don't like missing cuts, period. If I miss the cut that means you can't win the tournament on the weekend. I've got a shot at it this weekend.”
Players will complete the remaining holes of the second round today before heading into the third round.
