Paul Casey tops the leader board at Golf Tour Championship 2010 with a 66
The world of golf has finally entered its much anticipated week with the PGA Tour’s last quarter.
The Tour Championship 2010 started yesterday on Thursday and its round one has come to an end. The leader board displays a tie between three players. Geoff Ogilvy, Luke Donald and Paul Casey are all seen standing at minus 4. Casey was able to play birdies,
which amounted to a 3-straight display. His birdies made him move to a 66 which tied him with Ogilvy and Donald.
Among the top three, Paul Casey has been in the news for quite some time, since he was barred from the Ryder Cup team. Although the 33-year-old wasn’t selected as a Captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup, it looks like his plans on grabbing the Tour Championship
are well underway. Since the Colin Montgomerie controversy, this has been the 7th time since Casey has played in the sixties bracket. In R1, Paul Casey was the only player among the top 5 golfers at FedEx Cup standings who was up for breaking par.
In the first hole Casey managed a par, and then played a birdie at 2nd par 3. With three consecutive pars at 3rd 4th and 5th, the Englishman captured a bogey in the next one. Casey’s game had been very careful
in the first round of the Tour Championship since after a par at the seventh, he managed a pack of back-to-back birdies. The birdies attained were on hole number 8th and 9th.
According to Casey, this has been his goal for quite some time. The 33-year-old has been able to finish at 5th place in the FedEx Cup rankings. He was placed in this position after he finished second at the Cog Hill. Subsequent to the playoffs
finale, the champion would get hold of a bonus of $ 10 Million. The golfers in the top five are in the list to claim the million dollar prize. However, the players beneath these standings will not be able to change the current scenario in any way.
Paul Casey, after his birdie at 10th, played four straight pars while standing at the minus 3 position. The situation changed from minus 3 to minus 4 when Casey played a birdie at the 15th hole. This was his last birdie in the round
one of the Tour Championship whose last holes saw Casey achieving Pars. His game at the last three holes kept him at minus 4 which marked a 66 in his record.
Paul Casey’s main goal is winning this tournament, which he wants to achieve by stepping into a position where the victory is visible enough. He says that if he reaches that point, it will be easy for him to tick off his resolution list. According to Casey,
this requires hard work and motivation, and he has both. He says that he has all the motivation there needs to be and any more would be regarded as extra inducement.
His hard work was displayed by his score card even in the presence of steamy conditions. For a golfer to break par when the leader board could only show high scores is hard work. The golf field of thirty pros allowed only nine of them to break a 70 score,
since the course has fairways which are fast, narrow and difficult to play.
The 33-year-old after the round one collected a total of 12 pars and 5 birdies. His previous collection ranked him at T11 and T3 respectively. With 78 greens in regulation, Casey is standing at a T4.
The amusing side here is that those who lead Paul Casey in the FedEx Cup standing are currently behind the Englishman in the leader boards. On the world rankings, he is standing at number 7, despite zero wins in this season.
