Paul Childs of Hayling Island Sailing Club retains lead on Day 3 of RS100 National Championships
Hayling Island Sailing Club’s Paul Childs stayed on top of the overall standings of RS100 National Championships after the end of Day 3 with 21 points in 10 races. Childs had a convincing sail on Weybiza waters and earned a fifth and two second-place finishes
in three races of the day at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.
The weather conditions at Weymouth and Portland on Day 3 were ideal for sailing, as the north easterly wind blew around 15 to 20 knots over the racing area. Along with the wind, heavy rains on Weybiza waters provided real challenge to the sailors and tested
their skills throughout the day. However, the conditions didn’t affect the racing schedule and the sailors completed their sail successfully.
The current fleet leader Childs grabbed an early lead at the windward mark in the first race but couldn’t maintain his run and dropped down after Neal Freeman of Parkstone Yacht Club took over. Childs sailed brilliantly in the second race leading the windward
mark and finished second in the race followed by Freeman and Jon Holroyd on third and fourth place consecutively.
The third race of Day 3 was a bit tight for Childs, as Rob Jones took an early windward mark lead in the race followed by Freeman and Ian Turnbull. However, Freeman snatched the lead from Jones and finished first, while Childs managed to hang on to the second
place again to retain the overall lead with 21 points.
The overall standings at the end of Day 3 are given below:
1. 170 327 Paul Childs, Hayling Island Sailing Club 4, 1, (7), 4, 2, (DNF 48), 1, 5, 2, 2 = 21 points
